Boise Man Convicted for Filing Fraudulent Insurance Claim

BOISE, ID (August 6, 2026) – The Idaho Department of Insurance (DOI) announced that James Cooper of Boise has been found guilty of one count of insurance fraud following a jury trial held on April 21, 2026.
The conviction stems from a claim Cooper filed with Farm Bureau Insurance Company for damage to his 2000 Chevrolet S10 pickup. During the investigation, the DOI Fraud Unit determined that the damage matched a previous claim Cooper had filed with Farmers Insurance Company, for which he had already received payment. Investigators confirmed that the damage to the vehicle was preexisting.
“Insurance fraud undermines the integrity of the entire system and ultimately harms honest Idahoans,” said Dean L. Cameron, Director of the Idaho Department of Insurance. “We will continue to pursue these cases diligently to help ensure a fair and reliable marketplace for consumers across our state.”
On June 17, 2026, Cooper was sentenced in Ada County to five years in prison. The sentence was suspended in lieu of five years of probation. As part of the court’s order, Cooper is required to serve 90 days in jail and complete 100 hours of community service. A restitution hearing has been scheduled for September 2, 2026.
